DECLUDE OPTIMIZES THE ABILITY OF SCIENTISTS TO PERFORM THEIR WORK AT THE WOODS
HOLE RESEARCH CENTER - April 2005
The Company The mission of the Woods Hole Research Center is
to understand the causes and consequences of environmental change as a basis
for policy solutions for a better world, stabilizing climate and protecting
the integrity of the global environment.
The Research Center is based in Woods Hole, MA.
The Problem Five years ago, when spam started to appear in
inboxes, the Woods Hole Research Center decided that it would implement a solution
before it got worse. The primary goal of the IT department is to optimize the
ability of scientists to perform their work. This includes advancing computing,
storage and communications capabilities while maintaining the security of data
and operating platforms.
The Solution Woods Hole discovered Declude through an IMail
forum. Currently, they run JunkMail Pro and are in the process of implementing
Declude Virus. Declude runs on a single IMail server supporting over 40 users. “Reliability,
ease of use, responsive technical support and a skilled user base are the reasons
I chose Declude’s solution”, stated Michael Ernst, a 15 year veteran
Computer Systems Administrator.
Ernst claims that JunkMail Pro is an effective tool for minimizing the impact
of spam on the Center’s business. In a typical month, only 58% of their
email is legitimate. 11% is rejected by filtering at the email server, 27%
is rejected out of hand by Declude and a manageable 4% is held by Declude for
review to determine legitimacy. Though a few spammed emails continue to trickle
through the net, the average amount is rarely more than two or three per user
daily.
“What pleases me most is that Declude has a highly responsive support
team when needed; their product is reasonably priced and contains a flexible
configuration mechanism that can be customized to meet our specific requirements,” says
Ernst. “The savings in staff time spent on reviewing spam is significant.
Our people no longer have to worry about large volumes of intrusive email during
the course of the day. My estimate is that once you’re past the modest
start up cost, the service agreement works out to cost just pennies a day per
user. Declude continues to prove itself each and every day”.
The Woods Hole Research Center has been a satisfied Declude customer since
February, 2000.
